Woodworking Tools and Jigs You Should Rely On

Sep 6, 2010

Now you’ve done it. You paid quite possibly thousands of dollars for the fabulous ban saw, or other such precision tools. One point to remember is that the woodworking enthusiast should keep a clean woodworking shop. Experts tell you that a clean shop reduced injuries. Maintain your tools, woodworking jigs and shop for a more enjoyable hobby and a safer woodworking experience. Your outcome will be finished items that are completed more accurately and you’ll enjoy your expensive equipment.

One of the most important tools the woodworking enthusiast can have is an excellent dust collection system. You should understand that people needlessly die everyday from injuries caused by dust particles entering their unprotected lungs. Airborne wood particles, because of the molds and chemicals in the wood, are known to cause both lung and skin irritations. If these irritants enter your respiratory system, they can kill you.

What you need to do in order to escape these injuries is clean your table and ban saw blades. Resin can build up to the heat generated by friction and that in turn causes the microorganism to become more active (does not kill them). To help cut down on danger from repository problems (including the development of cancer) is use any one of the ample products either at your local hardware store of on the Internet developed to clean saw blades.

Another source of dust hazard to the woodworking enthusiast is the route bit. It collects resin and just as with your saw blades will require periodic cleaning. When using saw blades or route bits in this condition, you’ll notice unnecessary vibration leading to sloppy cutting performance. If you’ve purchased a new power tool of this nature you have probably receive samples of maintenance products. Some feel that cleaning is too routine for them to practice.

“Real men don’t worry about this…” they say.  The trick to avoid any kind of injury is to actually use them. Cleaning your woodshop lengthens the life of any tool but especially cutting tools such as route bits and saw blades. You may have notice in your owner’s manual that there is a need to lubricate the route bit pilot bearings.

Your tools are important but other surfaces of your shop should be cleaned regularly. You might have been mistakenly avoiding that task but it needs to be done. Your wood shop table saw top, your ban saw table, your route table bench, your work and storage bench all need regular light cleaning with a mild soapy water which will clean and enhance your over all daily performance. You have to protect these and other surfaces from a corrosive buildup. This corrosion will effect your work surfaces in the shop such as table and band saw and lead to poor cutting performance. Cleaning might not the woodworking enthusiast favorite activity but it will save you down time and money.
